Project 2022-2024: Support to EU-Japan Region-to-Region Cooperation

The EU-Japan Region-to-Region Innovation Cooperation (IURC Japan) focused on:

  • EU-Japan programme to support regional innovation strategies and clusters between selected regions in the EU and Japan is established and promoted.
  • Peer-level (region-to-region) information sharing and exchange of best practices between the EU and Japan enhanced, with a focus on selected thematic planning and management capacities.
  • Planning and management capacities of participating EU and Japan regional authorities are strengthened.
  • European business opportunities are promoted in particular to the benefit of start-ups and SMEs.

The project involved six EU regions and five Japanese Prefectures. Four study visits – two groups of EU regions visiting Japan in November 2022 and two groups of Japanese prefectures (with appropriate modification of group members) traveling to the EU in June 2023 – were successfully conducted, alongside four exchange meetings and six webinars to foster regional and prefectural communication. The project supported the Strategic Partnership between the EU and Japan. It enabled partnerships between EU regions and Japanese prefectures, creating a network at personal, institutional, and business levels.

From November 2022 until March 2024, EU Consulta provided several experts in Europe and Japan to EPRD, which the European Union had commissioned with the project implementation.

The thematic area covered by the project was regional innovation.
